About Us

Cobaw Story

Cobaw was once part of  'Theden Run' (or 'The Den'), one of the first settled properties of  the Macedon Ranges, comprising many thousand acres, and running large flocks of sheep.

While still operating as a fine wool growing enterprise, today, Cobaw is home to Cobaw Sporting, which provides sporting clay and field hunting opportunities for both the novice and more experienced shot. Cobaw Sporting also provides very popular Partridge hunting during the winter months, and takes clients to Yorkshire for the best driven shooting trip in the world.

Cobaw ENVIRONMENT

A comprehensive environmental plan was put into action in 2000. This twenty year plan has the objectives of improving water quality, and providing wildlife corridors throughout the property. 90 kilometers of tree seeding, and over 8,500 seedlings have been planted along the waterways, and over the granite rises. Significant environmental advances have been made as evidenced by the native birds and other animals attracted to the property.

Cobaw has worked closely with Greening Australia, DSE, Tree Project, Field and Game Australia, Green Fleet, and the Macedon Rangers SC to achieve these remarkable results.

COBAW COOKING

Cobaw Cooking specialises in providing country home style hospitality during your visit to Cobaw Sporting. Home baked goodies are offered with your tea and coffee upon arrival at the shoot lodge. Following your shoot, enjoy a drink and then some platter appetizers before taking a seat at the table. Locally grown meat and seasonal vegetables are the essential ingredients for your lunch and when available, Cobaw game is offered during the season. There are good local wines that may enhance the enjoyment of your meal.

Cobaw Corporate Shoot

CORPORATE SHOOT

For a staff team building event, or to entertain clients, Cobaw Sporting offers a unique opportunity. Our instructors will brief your party on safety, and ensure they have an enjoyable, and challenging experience.

The corporate shoot begins with a detailed safety briefing over tea and coffee. This is followed by group shooting with individual instruction, and then a competiton 'shoot off'. Drinks in the Shoot Room, and a three-course sit down lunch conclude the Cobaw corporate experience.

Cobaw High Tower

COBAW FLUSH

A great event for the experienced gun, the Cobaw Flush is designed to simulate a driven shoot, with plenty of action. Shot by a party of at least 8 guns, the event incorporates at least 14 traps, including up to 11 from the towers, and is generally shot over 5 drives. Stuffers are welcome, and sometimes this is shot as a double-gun event.

The Cobaw Flush is tailored to your own requirements with a wide variety of shots available to challenge even the experienced gun.

Cobaw Grouse Butts

RABBIT AND GROUSE BUTTS

Over four traditional granite rock Butts the birds come at challenging angles and varying speeds. This testing shot may be a full day through all the Butts, or incorporated into a bigger shoot including the Towers and a Flush.

The Cobaw Rabbit is both interesting and challenging - sometimes a rouge rabbit, and other times just that black one bolting for the burrow! Some guns like to test their skill and shoot the Rabbit as an individual event, and others elect the three gun double-barrel shoot as a team event.

FIELD HUNTING

PARTRIDGE HUNTING

Cobaw Sporting provides some of the best partridge hunting available in Australia. From April through to September, we offer your party sporting birds in a beautiful country environment. Located only one hour from Melbourne Airport our walked up shoot is set in a valley edged by bracken fern rises.

'Elevenses' are enjoyed during the shoot, and a lovely luncheon in the shoot lodge is served following the hunting. Guests are welcome to bring their well behved dog, who may enjoy a retrieve or two.

On your shoot day you will be accomanied by our experienced game keepers, their spaniels and pointing dogs. You should see some good dog work, wild flying birds, while all the time in good company. A very popular day is a 100 bird day for up to eight guns.

Cobaw Sporting also hosts days of partridge hunting for individuals or small groups wishing to work and hunt their own dogs.

QUAIL HUNTING

During the quail season, generally from April to June in Victoria, there is some very good quail shooting to be enjoyed. Hunted over pointing and flushing dogs, many say that a day out on the quail is the most enjoyable.

This is for individual guns, or small parties. You may bring your own well begaved dog, or just shoot over ours.

The availability of quail hunting varies greatly with the seasons, and suitable conditions can change without notice.

GROUSE PLATE

This is a special shoot in August to commemorate the opening of the Grouse season on 'The Glorious 12th.' Cobaw Sporting provides an authentic grouse experience, with teams of four guns shooting over grouse butts fashioned from historic granite salvaged from the original 'Cobaw' homestead. The event provides challenging shooting for the guns. 'Left,' 'right,' 'over,' 'pair,' all in quick succession. Four hundred birds are pushed over each team, with the highest score to date at '257' shots! The shoot is followed by a luncheon and plate presentation to the winning team at the Cobaw shoot room.
